The best: It completely absorbs your attention during much of the footage.
The worst: As a social-media critic, it is little.
After seeing this outstanding, hypnotic feature film at times, I ran to find out about this Hendrik Willemyns, who signed the script, the direction and the soundtrack. It turns out that he is an older man, with a ‘rock’ pose and a lecturer’s gaze. And Birdsong is “only” his second film, but nothing as a fledgling: this kind of attractive Thom Yorke from a small country has already been in three world wars; with his band Arsenal, as a director of documentaries and video clips, even as a writer. And, of course, you are not at all in Birdsong a work of learning, but an artifact with self-consciousness at full blast; conceived and executed by someone who knows what to say and how, which offers you without guilt his whims (plot, aesthetic, sound) as part of this game to which, after his years, he has decided to join.
Of course, transcending the sensorial cellophane, the cool surrealism more of a perfume spot than of Mullholand Drive (David Lynch, 2001) or Tokyo Decadence (Ryu Murakami, 1992), there is that acíbar on the palate that reminds you that you have seen a dark moral fable about broken innocence, poisoned but drinkable.
