The Social Reckoning: Cast, Plot Basis and Box Office

The Social Reckoning, Aaron Sorkin’s drama about the 2021 Facebook leak, opened in US theaters on October 9, 2026, and had a weak start. A report carried by The Spokesman-Review says it took $5.5 million in North America and debuted at number five.

What the film covers

The story follows Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, played by Mikey Madison, and Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, played by Jeremy Allen White. Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg after Jesse Eisenberg declined to return, and Zuckerberg is a supporting character rather than the focus. Wikipedia says the film draws on Horwitz’s reporting for The Wall Street Journal, his 2024 book Broken Code and Haugen’s 2023 memoir The Power of One. Bill Burr, Wunmi Mosaku, Billy Magnussen and Betty Gilpin are also in the cast.

Production

Sorkin wrote and directed. Wikipedia says development was announced in June 2025 under the working title The Social Network Part II, with filming in Vancouver from October 22 to December 9, 2025. Alexandre Desplat composed the score, replacing Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Sony’s Columbia Pictures and Alcon Entertainment produced it. Variety reported a budget of $30 million, per the same report.

The numbers

The report compares the $5.5 million opening with the $22.4 million that The Social Network made in 2010. Wikipedia lists about $17 million worldwide so far, about $9 million of it from the US and Canada, and says Sony is expected to lose a few million dollars after ancillary revenue. These are early figures and may change.

Reception

Critics were mixed. The report gives 54% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, against 96% for The Social Network.

Why it matters

The film is a follow-up in spirit to The Social Network, so its opening is being measured against that earlier release. The sources we opened do not say how the film is expected to perform on streaming or home video.
