Story setup
Amazon describes the season as set five years after the fall of Eregion. Sauron’s armies have conquered most of Middle-earth, and only Khazad-dûm, Lindon and Rivendell remain free. Sauron, from his new tower of Barad-dûr, is fixated on forging the One Ring, and the free peoples must unite to stop him.

Behind the camera
J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay are the showrunners. Wikipedia lists Charlotte Brändström, Sanaa Hamri and Stefan Schwartz as directors, with filming in the UK beginning in May 2025 and wrapping in October 2025, including location work in Dorset and Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland.
Why it matters
The season is built around the forging of the One Ring, the event the whole series has been moving toward, so this is a pivotal stretch for the show. Because the first four episodes arrive together, viewers can expect a large opening block, followed by two shorter drops.
