Clayface Opens at No. 1 With an Estimated $24.5 Million

DC Studios’ Clayface opened at number one at the North American box office on the weekend of October 23 to 25, 2026. The result was solid for a modestly priced R-rated film, though it landed below the studio’s own projection.

The opening

According to Fortune, Clayface took an estimated $24.5 million from 3,458 theaters, earned an A- CinemaScore and reportedly cost $44 million to make. The studio had projected $25 million to $30 million. The same report puts A24’s documentary You Can See Everything second with $19.5 million. Wikipedia lists about $84 million worldwide as of November 1, with $45 million in the US and Canada.

Cast and crew

James Watkins directed. The screenplay is credited to Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, with Flanagan also credited for the story. Tom Rhys Harries plays Matt Hagen, who becomes Clayface. Naomi Ackie plays Dr. Caitlyn Corr, with David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan in supporting roles. The film is produced by DC Studios and 6th & Idaho and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Wikipedia describes it as the third film in the DC Universe.

What it is about

The film follows an actor who is disfigured, turns to an experimental treatment and is transformed into a shapeshifting creature. Reviews describe it as body horror about a Batman villain rather than a standard superhero film, and Fortune notes its R rating.

Reception

Wikipedia reports 77% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes from 206 critics and a Metacritic score of 59 out of 100. It says critics praised Harries’s performance and the practical effects, while some criticised the script and the visual effects.

What to watch next

The film’s second-weekend drop and its total against a $44 million budget are the numbers to follow. Figures here are estimates from the sources below and may change when studios report actuals.
