Sacrifice on Netflix: Cast, Premise and Reviews

Sacrifice, a thriller directed by Romain Gavras and starring Chris Evans and Anya Taylor-Joy, began streaming on Netflix in the United States and France on October 16, 2026. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025.

Premise

Netflix describes the story this way: Mike Tyler, a washed-up action star played by Evans, attends an environmental charity gala at a remote Greek mine. A cult leader named Joan, played by Taylor-Joy, and her followers take over the event and insist a world-ending disaster will strike in three days unless three people are sacrificed to a nearby volcano. The official Netflix Tudum page carries the release date and cast list.

Cast and crew

Gavras directed and wrote the script with Will Arbery. The cast also includes Vincent Cassel, Salma Hayek, John Malkovich, Sam Richardson, Charli XCX, Yung Lean and Ambika Mod. Wikipedia says the project was announced in May 2024 with Brendan Fraser attached, that Fraser left over scheduling conflicts and that Cassel replaced him. Filming ran from November 2024 in Greece, Bulgaria and Iceland and wrapped on December 30, 2024.

Release history

According to Wikipedia, the film had its world premiere at TIFF on September 6, 2025, an Italian theatrical release on August 12, 2026, and the Netflix release on October 16, 2026.

Reception

Reviews are mostly negative. Wikipedia reports that 35% of 57 Rotten Tomatoes reviews are positive, with an average of 5 out of 10, and a Metacritic score of 46 out of 100 from 16 critics.
